SYM Crew How to write a yachting CV

Ensure your crew CV is amongst the best with these top tips from SYM Crew.

1) YOUR CV IS YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE A GREAT FIRST IMPRESSION!

Laid out clearly, easy to read, no more than two pages; an electronic copy in Word with references (and a menu with photos of food for chefs).

2) INCLUDE A PHOTO

A smart portrait photo with a nice smile!

3) PERSONAL INFORMATION

Your full name, address, nationality, date of birth, passport and visa details, languages spoken plus a permanent email account and a contact number.

4) PERSONAL PROFILE

A few lines about your goals, personality and worthy attributes can help to make the best possible first impression.

5) QUALIFICATIONS

Include all yacht and hospitality related qualifications, licences and courses.

6) PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Clearly laid out in chronological order with the most recent at the top. Dates of employment & a brief description. For yachting experience include your position, duties and responsibilities, the size and build of the yacht, the areas you cruised, and finally your reason for leaving. For non-yachting experiences emphasize the duties relevant to the position you are seeking.

7) PERSONAL INTERESTS & ACHIEVEMENTS

Show your well rounded interests & personality - living and working on board a yacht means you’ll be part of a close-knit team so this is an opportunity to make a case for why you’ll make a good crewmember!

8) REFERENCES

Name and contact details of at least two professional referees.  If your CV has made a good impression these are the next point of contact so make sure they are prepared for contact to be made.

9) TEMPLATES

There are some great CV templates on line now for a more professional look.

10) FILE NAME

Use your full name and date created so we can easily find your latest CV.

Remember to keep it clear, well laid out and easy to read! Good luck...
